Physiotherapy Helping Relieve TMJ

Physiotherapy can help relieve TMJ issues by targeting pain, jaw function, and joint movement. Physiotherapists use a mix of manual techniques, exercises and education to address the muscular and joint imbalance that contribute to TMJ pain and dysfunction.

Techniques & Exercises

Manual Therapy

Physios use hands on techniques to gently mobilise jaw, neck and upper back. The aim is to relieve stiffness improve alignment and reduce pain. Soft tissue massage may also be used on the jaw and surrounding muscles to relieve tightness and trigger points.  

Jaw Exercises

Specific exercises are prescribed to help strengthen and stretch your muscles, improve your range of motion and encourage proper alignment of the jaw. These might include gentle movements to open and close the mouth correctly and exercises to control jaw movement.

Postural Training

Poor posture can strain the jaw and neck. Postural techniques can be taught to reduce pressure on the TMJ by aligning the head, neck shoulders which can prevent further jaw irritation.

Pain Relief Techniques

Therapists may use heat, cold or electrotherapy AND ultrasound to manage pain and reduce muscle tension around the jaw.

Education and Home Exercises

Patients learn how to manage and prevent symptoms through simple self care exercises, relaxation techniques and awareness of habits like teeth grinding or clenching.

These methods aim to relieve pain restore function and help patients feel more in control of their symptoms.
